knows taxes are due on april 15. we set up tax centers on the base three months prior and we take active duty military personnel off their regular duties and they go in and assist people with their taxes. you have people assisting with federal and state taxes. we provide nothing of the sort for voting registration. the move act was supposed to get offices set up on the basis. everybody could have gone in to check in with that voting assistance officer. that has never been in place while we were on active duty. we don't want a stack of voter registration ballots sitting on a counter somewhere. we want them to physically go in and say whether they want to register or not. this is the only way we can track it and find out if it is sure apathy which i find hard to believe. or is it just not having access? host: there is a project called a military voter protection project and they compared 2008 ballot requests and 2012 ballot requests and looking at key states, they thought there was a great difference as far bell requests. do you believe there is a significant difference? guest: this is hor

of taxes. there aren't enough tax loopholes or tax deductions to pay for romney's tax cut unless you cut into home interest mortgage deductions, unless you get rid of state and local taxes. that will hit the middle class hard. you have to be honest about this. the debate hurt obama and helped romney, and romney's gotten a bump in the polls, although it seems to be flattening out. you look at the new poll in ohio, the president is at 51%, romney is at 47%. i think the president, the fundamental structure of the race hasn't been changed, but if he doesn't go on the attack, if biden doesn't do a good job against ryan, and if the president doesn't show up and isn't strong in the second debate, then you're going to have a tossup race. >> well, i would disagree with your approach, first of all. i don't approach it that way. that's going back and relegating all the old arguments. in spirit what i would do, unlike shrumy, i would take the big issue that is separating the candidates, don't get into the little trench warfare about what's your tax plan and where were you on medicare two weeks ago.

on that but the fiscal cliff being the package of spending cuts and tax increases that are scheduled to go into effect the end of the year. and there is a lot of worry among economists and business people that could throw the economy and spending cuts in defense, you've got a lot of defense contractors word rid about what is going to happen after the turn of the new year. it's anybody's guess in terms of whether congress can come together after the election but before every new person takes office. there is hope that in the november through january period that congress and the white house can come to an agreement and either postpone those spending cuts or tax increases or come to some new agreement on the budget that could replace the fiscal cliff. i think there will be a postponement of it and perhaps waiting for the new presidential and congressional elections, wait until they come in and sort it out. but depending on how the election goes, the lame duck session which will be in office after the election might be a reason to make a deal before the new people come in. so we'll see. host: the next cal
